Date Night @ Marlowe
Posted on 2010.10.10 | 1 CommentDate night last night at Marlowe in San Francisco. I like the environment, like a combo of industrial and old wood, and the music (a sucker for the Dirty Dancing soundtrack). “Snacks” may have been the best part: the famous brussels sprout chips were crispy, tasty, a little oily… The peaches with burrata and “smoke” with arugula were rich sweet and just that little bit peppery… Delicious. I could have eaten more burrata but it is fair to say it was snack sized. The roasted bone marrow was nicely presented and tasty but nothing particularly special…our main dish lamb was... -
Commonwealth
Posted on 2010.10.02 | 1 CommentCaught the tasting menu at Commonwealth and shared a wine tasting. Not inexpensive, but interesting, modern and enjoyable. Amuse was a delicate sashimi-like dish… cocktail an odd liquid-nitrogen frozen sake combination which was intriguing but less a drink and more a granita. Tasting menu featured lots of offal (e,g. sweetbreads, my favorite). Would go again, next time probably to order off the regular menu and pick and choose myself. And it’s not often you find a restaurant donating $10 from each tasting menu to charity and taking votes on potential recipients. Not to mention its own parking lot. In the... -
incanto St. John Hotel Dinner
Posted on 2010.05.13 | 2 CommentsOn Tuesday night I met the extremely lovely Foodhoe who invited me to join her at her reservation at incanto’s Fergus Henderson dinner. Henderson is famous for (as is Consentino) using the “whole beast” and as such we had an offal meal. It was delicious, but the company was even better. I’m about to leave town for ten days but I wanted to get this up before I leave, so here are the pictures. Enjoy! The pictures will load in a gallery here. Mouse over the picture to get the buttons for “Next” and “Previous.” Descriptions of the courses are... -
Terra Bakery & Cafe Opens
Posted on 2010.04.29 | No CommentsIf I were still looking for a place to live, Hayes Valley would be near the top of my list. And then I'd have to hope that being to close to Paulette's macarons, Christopher Elbow's hazelnut patties, La Boulange's tarts, Suppenkuche's wienerschnitzel (I had better stop there and save the rest for a Hayes Valley post) would be made up for by walking to and from my house. Somehow I doubt it. Add to that list now the Fried Chicken Sandwich at the newly-opened Terra Bakery & Cafe at the corner of Hayes and Gough. -

Eating at San Francisco’s Michelin Stars
Posted on 2009.12.01 | No CommentsThe Michelin star ratings for San Francisco were released back in October. I haven't exactly made it a goal to eat at all the restaurants on the list, but I thought I'd examine the list and see which I've been to, and maybe revisit some I haven't been to in a while, and put others on my radar. Turns out I haven't been to many, especially not recently, so I can't speak much to whether they've earned the stars are not… but, here goes. And lots of others to come. Eaten eat (ever) Eaten at (in the past year) Three... -
sebo
Posted on 2009.08.07 | No CommentsCurrently my favorite place in SF to go for a good sushi experience. Here, one of the owners shapes some of the rice up for a piece of nigiri. Below, I love the expression on his face as he blow torches some daurade. Sebo is like going to a neighborhood sushi joint in Japan, except slightly more upscale than most of what you’d find down-the-block in most neighborhoods. Also priced similarly to sushi jn Japan, which is to say, steep but worth it (ok, and it’s actually still less expensive than you’d get similar quality in Japan). Sit at the... -
farmer brown: $15 brunch
Posted on 2009.06.06 | No CommentsWho knew you could get a good, all-you-can-eat brunch in SF for just $15? And I don’t mean an Indian buffet — which, don’t get me wrong, is good in its own right — but just isn’t a Western brunch. Or, in this case, a Southern brunch. Comfort food all the way. Hit farmer brown with Mosspink today after taking Bellodawg for a walk and swim at Crissy Field. Brunch is all-you-can-eat fried chicken, bacon, scrambled eggs, pancakes, potatoes, biscuits and grits. There may have been something else, but I can’t recall. Plus, they also have (for extra) bottomless mimosas,...
